# Cambridge A Level Maths 9709: Papers, Routes, Grading and How to Prepare

> Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics (9709) has six papers. The full A Level is four of them: Paper 1 and Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics) plus Paper 5 and either Paper 4 or Paper 6. Exams run in June and November, a formula list (MF19) is provided, and grades come from raw-mark thresholds that change every series.

## Key takeaways

- 9709 has six papers: Pure Mathematics 1, 2 and 3, Mechanics, and Probability & Statistics 1 and 2.
- A Level = Paper 1 + Paper 3 + Paper 5 + either Paper 4 or Paper 6. AS Level = Paper 1 + one of Paper 2, 4 or 5.
- Papers 1 and 3 are 1 hour 50 minutes for 75 marks; Papers 2, 4, 5 and 6 are 1 hour 15 minutes for 50 marks.
- A scientific calculator is allowed on every paper, and the MF19 formula list is provided.
- In June 2026 the A* threshold was between 222 and 234 out of 250, depending on the variant.

Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics, syllabus code 9709, is the A Level maths most Cambridge schools teach. This guide covers how the qualification is put together, so you know which papers to prepare for, how they are marked and what to focus on. Each section links to a deeper article.

## What are the six 9709 papers?

The 2026 to 2027 syllabus splits the content into six components. Every question in every paper is compulsory.

| Paper | Content | Time | Marks | Weighting |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Paper 1 | Pure Mathematics 1 | 1 h 50 min | 75 | 60% of AS, 30% of A Level |
| Paper 2 | Pure Mathematics 2 | 1 h 15 min | 50 | 40% of AS (AS only) |
| Paper 3 | Pure Mathematics 3 | 1 h 50 min | 75 | 30% of A Level (A Level only) |
| Paper 4 | Mechanics | 1 h 15 min | 50 | 40% of AS, 20% of A Level |
| Paper 5 | Probability & Statistics 1 | 1 h 15 min | 50 | 40% of AS, 20% of A Level |
| Paper 6 | Probability & Statistics 2 | 1 h 15 min | 50 | 20% of A Level (A Level only) |

Paper 1 is the foundation for everything else. Papers 2 and 3 build on it, and Paper 2's content is largely a subset of Paper 3's. Paper 5 is the foundation for Paper 6.

You will see paper codes like 9709/12 or 9709/32. The first digit is the paper and the second is the variant, so 9709/12 is Paper 1, variant 2. Different variants are sat in different time zones and have slightly different grade thresholds.

## Which papers do you take for AS and A Level?

* **AS Level only:** Paper 1 plus one of Paper 2, Paper 4 or Paper 5. The Paper 1 + Paper 2 option cannot count towards a full A Level.
* **Full A Level in one series:** Papers 1, 3, 4 and 5, or Papers 1, 3, 5 and 6.
* **Staged A Level:** take an AS first (Paper 1 with Paper 4 or 5), then complete the A Level later with Paper 3 and the matching applied paper.

You cannot sit Paper 2 and Paper 3 in the same series. The full set of routes, and how to choose between Mechanics and Statistics, is in [Which 9709 papers do you need?](https://mathvsarham.com/articles/9709-paper-combinations/)

## What is in the 9709 syllabus for each paper?

* **Paper 1:** quadratics, functions, coordinate geometry, circular measure, trigonometry, series, differentiation and integration. See the [Paper 1 guide](https://mathvsarham.com/articles/9709-paper-1-pure-mathematics-1/).
* **Paper 3:** algebra, logarithmic and exponential functions, trigonometry, differentiation, integration, numerical solution of equations, vectors, differential equations and complex numbers.
* **Paper 4 (Mechanics):** forces and equilibrium, kinematics in a straight line, momentum, Newton's laws, and energy, work and power.
* **Paper 5 (Probability & Statistics 1):** representation of data, permutations and combinations, probability, discrete random variables and the normal distribution.
* **Paper 6 (Probability & Statistics 2):** the Poisson distribution, linear combinations of random variables, continuous random variables, sampling and estimation, and hypothesis tests.

## When are the exams, and can you sit them privately?

Cambridge offers 9709 in the June and November series, and in March for schools in India. Each school belongs to an administrative zone with its own timetable, so check yours on the [Cambridge timetables page](https://www.cambridgeinternational.org/timetables). Private candidates can enter for 9709.

Cambridge designs the course for about 180 guided learning hours for AS Level and about 360 for the full A Level.

## What do you get in the exam room?

* **A scientific calculator** in every paper. Graphical calculators, and calculators that do symbolic algebra, differentiation or integration, are not permitted.
* **The MF19 list of formulae and statistical tables.** It is shared with Further Mathematics (9231), so some sections are not for you. See [what MF19 gives you and what to memorise](https://mathvsarham.com/articles/mf19-formula-list/).
* **A ruler.** A protractor and compasses are not required.

Give non-exact answers to three significant figures, or one decimal place for angles in degrees, unless the question says otherwise. Do not round until the final answer.

## How is 9709 graded?

AS Level is graded a to e and A Level A* to E. There is no A* on an individual paper: Cambridge adds your marks across the papers and compares the total with that series' thresholds. For the full A Level the total is out of 250, and in June 2026 the A* threshold ranged from 222 to 234 depending on the variant.

How to read the threshold tables, and what they mean for your target, is covered in [9709 grade boundaries explained](https://mathvsarham.com/articles/9709-grade-boundaries/).

## How should you prepare?

1. **Get Paper 1 secure first.** Every other paper assumes it.
2. **Learn the method, then practise by topic.** Use past paper questions one topic at a time until they feel routine.
3. **Move to full timed papers.** Do Papers 1 and 3 in 1 hour 50 minutes and the others in 1 hour 15 minutes.
4. **Mark against the mark scheme, then read the examiner report.** Most lost marks come from working and accuracy, not unknown content. See [the mistakes Cambridge examiners keep reporting](https://mathvsarham.com/articles/9709-common-mistakes-examiner-reports/).
5. **Plan for the grade you want.** [How to get an A* in 9709](https://mathvsarham.com/articles/how-to-get-an-a-star-in-a-level-maths/) turns the thresholds into a mark budget for each paper.
